From the Deep: The Story Behind Hansea’s New Sea Monster

There is something about the North Sea that refuses to feel entirely tame.

Even on a calm day, it carries a sense of unease. The water is dark, the horizon is enormous, and the weather can turn before you have properly noticed it changing. Beneath the surface lies a world that is largely unseen: wrecks, shifting banks, strange marine life and whatever else the tide has chosen not to return.

That atmosphere sits at the heart of Hansea’s latest design.

Hansea Deep Sea Extra Heavyweight Hoodie
£75.00

Built for cold harbours, exposed coastlines and whatever is lurking beneath them.

The Deep Sea Hoodie pairs Hansea’s snarling fish artwork with an exceptionally substantial 400 gsm fabric. A smaller chest print keeps the front understated, while the full-scale back graphic brings the deep-sea creature, tangled green forms and dripping Hansea lettering to life.

Made from a heavyweight blend of brushed organic ringspun cotton and recycled cotton, it feels warm, structured and reassuringly solid. The double-layered hood comes without drawcords for a cleaner silhouette, while ribbed cuffs and hem help hold its shape.

A Fish That Was Never Going to Be Friendly

The Deep Sea graphic began with the idea of creating another creature within the same strange family as our Fish Burp and Fish Puke designs.

It needed to feel recognisably Hansea: bold, irreverent and rooted in the sea, but never polished into the usual clean-cut version of coastal clothing. There would be no tasteful anchor, delicate wave or neatly illustrated sailing boat.

Instead, we wanted something that looked as though it had been dragged from the bottom of the North Sea after several hundred unpleasant years.

The result is a huge orange-red fish with a glowing eye, exposed teeth and a body tangled in trails of toxic green matter. Across it sits the Hansea name in dripping lettering, graduating from vivid orange into an almost radioactive pink.

It is loud, grotesque and difficult to ignore.

    Exactly as intended.

Coastal Clothing Without the Polite Bits

Coastal brands often focus on the most attractive parts of life beside the sea: sunshine, clean beaches, pale blue water and immaculate boats.

That is not really the coast we know.

The North Norfolk shoreline is beautiful, but it is also muddy, windswept, cold and constantly changing. Boats sit tilted on exposed creek beds. Ropes, paintwork and timber are weathered by salt. Marshes disappear beneath spring tides and re-emerge covered in whatever the sea has left behind.

The Deep Sea design belongs to that version of coastal life.

Its tangled forms echo weed, rope, foam and marine growth. The fish has the exaggerated menace of an old skate graphic or underground comic, while the colours bring something almost psychedelic to the otherwise murky world beneath the water.

It is maritime clothing with the romance taken out—and something much stranger put back in.

Designed to Work Big and Small

One of the challenges with a detailed illustration is making sure it still works across different garments and print sizes.

On the T-shirt, the full design becomes the centrepiece. The lettering cuts directly across the fish while the green tendrils wrap around the composition, creating a dense, almost circular image.

On the heavyweight hoodie, the design is used differently. A smaller chest version keeps the front restrained, while the full graphic appears across the back. From the front, it is relatively subtle. Turn around and the creature reveals itself properly.

That contrast suits the design. It does not announce everything immediately.

The Next Creature in the Hansea World

Fish Burp and Fish Puke helped establish a visual language for Hansea that feels distinct from conventional seaside clothing. They are absurd, slightly disgusting and strangely cheerful—designs that do not take themselves too seriously, despite being carefully considered and highly detailed.

The Deep Sea fish takes that world somewhere darker.

It feels less like a joke and more like a warning. A creature from below, twisted around the Hansea name and still trying to bite its way out.

There is no neat moral behind it and no inspirational message hidden in the illustration. It is simply a powerful sea monster on a very good piece of clothing.

    Sometimes that is enough.
